As part of the West Virginia University Order of Augusta Welcome Home Initiative, WVU
Presidential Student Ambassadors and Order of Augusta recipients were invited
to a February 2021 preview of Mary Bess Marantz’s new book, Dirt, a
personal memoir about growing up in West Virginia. The following week, she was featured as a
speaker in the WVU Festival of Ideas.
Festival
of Ideas Host Carolyn Atkins introduced Marantz’s story as a reminder that a successful life encompasses many
traits: drive, determination, hard work,
patience, passion, and the desire to connect with others. Atkins continued, “Who
would have thought that a young girl who grew up in a single-wide trailer in
rural West Virginia… would be the first in
her family to attend college…would continue to graduate from Yale’s
prestigious law school….and would build with her husband, Justin, a successful
online education platform for creative entrepreneurs?”
Inducted into Order of Augusta in 2006, Mary also is host of
